Psychiatric Nurse

Overview:

As a psychiatric nurse, you’ll be at the forefront of providing compassionate and comprehensive care to those in need. Working closely with patients, families, and multidisciplinary teams, you’ll assess, diagnose, plan, implement, and evaluate tailored care plans, contributing to a supportive and therapeutic environment focused on promoting mental health wellness and neurodiversity awareness and support.

Responsibilities:

  1. Assessment and Evaluation:
  • Conduct thorough assessments of patients’ mental health status, utilising standardised tools and interview techniques.
  • Collaborate with healthcare professionals to gather comprehensive data for accurate diagnosis and treatment planning.
  1. Treatment Planning and Implementation:
  • Develop individualised care plans based on patients’ needs, preferences, and treatment goals.
  • Provide medication education and psychotherapy services using evidence-based techniques.
  • Implement crisis intervention strategies to address acute psychiatric emergencies.
  1. Patient Education and Support:
  • Educate patients and families about mental health conditions, treatment options, and self-care strategies.
  • Offer emotional support and counselling to those coping with mental illness.
  • Facilitate support groups and psychoeducational sessions to enhance coping skills.
  1. Collaboration and Coordination:
  • Work collaboratively with healthcare professionals to coordinate holistic care plans.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings to discuss patient progress and treatment adjustments.
  • Advocate for patients’ rights and access to appropriate services within the healthcare system.
  1. Documentation and Evaluation:
  • Maintain accurate clinical documentation, including assessments, care plans, and progress notes.
  • Evaluate patient response to treatment interventions and modify care plans as needed.
  • Monitor and report any significant changes in patients’ mental status or behavior to the healthcare team.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing or Associate Degree in Nursing from an accredited institution. Master’s degree in psychiatric-mental health nursing preferred.
  • Valid registered nurse (RN) license with AHPRA.
  • Certification in psychiatric-mental health nursing preferred.
  • Strong clinical assessment and critical thinking skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
  • Compassion, empathy, and nonjudgmental attitude toward individuals with mental health disorders.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced and challenging healthcare environment.
  • Knowledge of mental health laws, ethical standards, and best practices in psychiatric nursing.
